The Infinitive Mood

In Bengali, the infinitive mood is a non-finite verb form, often ending in “-তে” (te), which expresses an action without a specific subject or tense. For example, “বল” (bol, to speak) becomes “বলতে” (bolte). Bengali infinitives are commonly used before a finite verb or as a gerund, and can be translated to “to + verb” in English.

How it works

  • Formation: The infinitive is formed by adding the suffix “-তে” (te) to the verb root.

 

  • Example: “যাওয়া” (jaowa, to go) becomes “যেতে” (jete).

 

  • Placement: In Bengali, the infinitive form often comes before the finite verb, which is different from English where the infinitive typically follows it.

 

  • Example: “আমি যেতে চাই” (Ami jete chai) means “I want to go”.

Usage:

  • As a complement: To express a desire, necessity, or ability.
  • “রাম খেলতে ভালবাসে” (Ram khelte bhalobase) – Ram loves to play.

 

  • “তুমি আমাকে একটা চিঠি লিখতে বলেছিলে” (Tumi amake ekta chithi likhte bolechhile) – You told me to write a letter.

 

  • As a noun: The infinitive can act like a noun (gerund) in a sentence.

 

  • “তোমার এই বইটা পড়ার উপর মনোনিবেশ করা উচিত” (Tomar ei boita porar upor mononibesh kora uchit) – You should concentrate on reading this book.

 

  • “আমার লন্ডনে যাওয়া অনেকের দ্বারা পছন্দকৃত না” (Amar London-e jaowa oneker dara pochhondokrito na) – My going to London is not liked by many people.

The Infinitive Mood

  1. রাম খেলতে ভালবাসে – Ram loves to play.
  2. শ্যাম পড়তে আরম্ভ করলো – Shyam began to read.
  3. আমি কলকাতা যেতে চাই – I wish go to Kolkata.
  4. তুমি আমাকে একটা চিঠি লিখতে বলেছিলে – You told me to write a letter.

Note :- (১) বাংলায় যেতে, থেকে, পড়তে, বসতে প্রভৃতি ক্রিয়া গুলো  সমাপিকা ক্রিয়ার আগে বসে, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে এমন Infinitive গুলো ক্রিয়ার পরে বসে।

(২) Infinitive Mood এ Verb – এর আগে To বসে, কিন্তু See, Hear, Make, May, Can, Will, Bid, Let প্রভৃতির পরে ‘To’ Understood থাকে। The Infinitive Mood যেমন –

  1. আমি তাকে যেতে দেখেছিলাম – I saw  him go.
  2. সে তাকে কাঁদতে শুনেছিল – He heard him cry.
  3. তিনি আমাকে দাঁড় করিয়েছিলেন – He made me stand up.
